Where Is Banggai?
The Banggai archipelago sits off the eastern coast of Sulawesi in Central Sulawesi province, Indonesia. Geographically, it occupies a position in the heart of the Coral Triangle — the global epicenter of marine biodiversity, where the Indian and Pacific Oceans meet.
The archipelago consists of the main Banggai island group (Kepulauan Banggai) and surrounding smaller islands, with the administrative center in Banggai Town on the coast. The region is part of the Banggai Laut (Sea Banggai) regency, which encompasses the marine and island areas.

The Current State of Tourism
Tourism in Banggai is nascent. There are no resorts, no tour buses, and no organized tourism infrastructure in the way most travelers expect. What exists is a network of local homestays, fishing boats available for charter, and a handful of guides who understand the area and can coordinate logistics.
Travelers typically reach Banggai through Luwuk (the nearest airport city) and arrange boat transport to the islands. Accommodation on the islands is almost entirely homestay-based, with a small number of more developed options. The experience is authentic, sometimes challenging, and deeply rewarding for the right traveler.
