About Bokan Island

Bokan Island (part of the Bowokan Islands group, also known as Kepulauan Bowokan) sits in the southeastern part of the Banggai archipelago and is increasingly mentioned among snorkelers and divers as one of the standout spots in the region. The island has a small village, a handful of homestay options, and coral reefs that start right off the beach. What makes Bokan special is the density and health of its coral — fields of staghorn, table coral, and soft corals teeming with reef fish.

Why Go

Bokan offers some of the best snorkeling you can do without a boat. The house reef is accessible at any tide, and the variety of coral and fish life is extraordinary. It's also a peaceful base for exploring nearby islands by boat.

What to Expect

Very simple accommodations. One or two homestays with basic rooms, shared meals with your hosts, and limited electricity. The reward is extraordinary reef access and almost zero crowds. You may be the only visitor on the island.

Practical Tips

  • Coordinate your homestay and boat in advance — you can't just show up easily.
  • Bring a waterproof bag for your electronics.
  • Meals are included with your homestay and typically feature fresh fish and rice.
  • There's no shop on the island — bring snacks, water purification, or extra supplies.
