A practical guide to island hopping in the Banggai archipelago — boats, routes, costs, and how to make the most of a multi-island day.

Island hopping is the defining Banggai experience. The archipelago is made up of dozens of islands — inhabited and uninhabited — scattered across warm, clear waters. Spending a day (or several) moving between them by boat, stopping to snorkel, swim, eat, and explore, is the best way to understand what makes this place special.

How It Works

There is no organized island-hopping tour service in Banggai. Instead, trips are arranged through local boat captains, usually coordinated by your guide or accommodation host. You charter a boat for the day, discuss your route based on weather and interests, and head out.

Typical Boat Options

  • **Wooden longboat (perahu):** The traditional option. Slower, more atmospheric, less expensive.
  • **Speedboat:** Faster and more efficient for covering longer distances. Available through some guides.

What a Typical Day Looks Like

Morning: Depart from your island base or the mainland harbor. First snorkeling stop at a reef site. Mid-morning: Arrive at a second island. Beach time, explore, snorkel. Lunch: On a sandbar, beach, or aboard the boat. Your guide typically brings rice and fresh fish, or stops at a village. Afternoon: One or two more islands. More snorkeling, photography, swimming. Late afternoon: Return to base before dark.

What to Bring

  • Snorkeling gear (or confirm your guide can provide)
  • Reef-safe sunscreen
  • Rashguard and hat
  • Waterproof bag for electronics
  • Cash for the day
  • Water and snacks
  • Dry clothes for the return

Cost Expectations

Boat charter costs vary based on distance, fuel costs, and boat type. As a rough guide, expect to pay between IDR 350,000–1,500,000 per day for a boat depending on the size and route. Prices approximate as of 2025. This is typically shared among the group, so traveling with others reduces the per-person cost.

Tips

  • **Be flexible with your route.** Your boat captain knows the sea conditions. Trust their judgment on which islands to visit and when.
  • **Start early.** The sea is usually calmest in the morning, and the light is best for snorkeling.
  • **Pace yourself.** It's tempting to see everything in one day, but three or four stops with real time at each is better than rushing through six.
  • **Respect the islands.** Many sandbars and uninhabited islands have no waste management. Pack out everything you bring.
